What community participation involves

Community participation is support to get out there: social outings, hobbies, sport, classes, volunteering, events and the everyday places that make up a life. A support worker comes alongside you — one-to-one or in a small group — so you can take part on your own terms.

It's usually funded under Assistance with Social, Economic and Community Participation in Core Supports. Your plan and the NDIA decide what's funded.

What's included

  • Social and recreational outings
  • Classes, hobbies and sport
  • Volunteering and community events
  • Building confidence in new places
  • One-to-one or small-group support

Community participation around Seven Hills

Seven Hills is a suburb in Greater Western Sydney about 33 km north-west of the Sydney CBD, within Blacktown City and the City of Parramatta. It has a shopping centre, Seven Hills Plaza, and neighbours Blacktown, Toongabbie, Lalor Park and Kings Langley.

Community participation in Seven Hills starts with what's close to home: Grantham Heritage Park, Seven Hills Plaza, and the community programs and events run by Blacktown City Council, listed on the council's website.

For outings further afield, Seven Hills station (T1 North Shore & Western Line; T5 Cumberland Line) connects Seven Hills to the rest of Sydney. Practising a train trip with a support worker is often a goal in its own right.

Local places that often feature in plans include Lalor Park Library (Lalor Park).

Many people we support also spend time in nearby Baulkham Hills, Toongabbie and Prospect, and activities don't have to stop at the suburb boundary.

Questions

Community participation in Seven Hills: common questions

What can I do around Seven Hills with community participation support?

Whatever you'd like to work towards. Close to home that might include Grantham Heritage Park, Lalor Park Library (Lalor Park), Seven Hills Plaza and programs and events run by Blacktown City Council. We'll plan outings around your interests, and go further afield when you're ready.

Can a support worker help me catch the train from Seven Hills?

Yes. Travelling together from Seven Hills until the trip feels familiar is a common community participation goal, and can lead to travelling independently.

Can I choose what activities I do?

Yes. Community participation is built around what you want to do, not a fixed program.

Are entry fees and tickets covered by the NDIS?

Usually not. The NDIS generally funds the support worker's time, while activity costs like tickets and memberships are paid by you.
