What community participation involves
Community participation is support to get out there: social outings, hobbies, sport, classes, volunteering, events and the everyday places that make up a life. A support worker comes alongside you — one-to-one or in a small group — so you can take part on your own terms.
It's usually funded under Assistance with Social, Economic and Community Participation in Core Supports. Your plan and the NDIA decide what's funded.
What's included
- Social and recreational outings
- Classes, hobbies and sport
- Volunteering and community events
- Building confidence in new places
- One-to-one or small-group support
Community participation around Baulkham Hills
Baulkham Hills is a mainly residential suburb in the Hills District, about 28 km north-west of the Sydney CBD, largely within The Hills Shire with a small section in the City of Parramatta. Baulkham Hills Junction, where Windsor Road, Old Northern Road and Seven Hills Road meet, sits in the suburb, which is bounded to the south by Junction Road near the Hills Motorway.
Community participation in Baulkham Hills starts with what's close to home: Bidjigal Reserve, Grove Square, and the community programs and events run by The Hills Shire Council, listed on the council's website.
Baulkham Hills doesn't have its own railway station, so outings usually start by car or bus — and learning a local bus trip with a support worker can become a goal in its own right.
Local places that often feature in plans include Baulkham Hills Library (Baulkham Hills), Sophia Doyle Reserve and Crestwood Reserve.
Many people we support also spend time in nearby Northmead, and activities don't have to stop at the suburb boundary.

Community participation in Baulkham Hills: common questions
What can I do around Baulkham Hills with community participation support?
Whatever you'd like to work towards. Close to home that might include Bidjigal Reserve, Baulkham Hills Library (Baulkham Hills), Sophia Doyle Reserve, Grove Square and programs and events run by The Hills Shire Council. We'll plan outings around your interests, and go further afield when you're ready.
Do you provide community participation support in Baulkham Hills?
Yes. We support people in Baulkham Hills 2153 and nearby suburbs such as Northmead. Which worker can help, and when, depends on the days and times you need, so tell us your suburb and routine when you enquire and we'll confirm what we can arrange.
Can I choose what activities I do?
Yes. Community participation is built around what you want to do, not a fixed program.
Are entry fees and tickets covered by the NDIS?
Usually not. The NDIS generally funds the support worker's time, while activity costs like tickets and memberships are paid by you.
