About capacity building
Capacity building is support that helps you become more able to do things yourself — not support that does them for you. The aim is that, over time, you need less help with the things you've chosen to work on.
It starts with your goals. Some people want to cook their own meals, catch public transport alone, manage a budget, get ready for work or prepare to move into Supported Independent Living. We practise those skills with you, in your own kitchen, on your own bus route and at your own pace, until they become something you just do.
Progress happens in stages: learning how something works, practising it together, building confidence, then doing more of it independently. There is no rush and no fixed course to complete.

How we can help
Cooking and meal planning
Planning meals, following a recipe, kitchen safety and cooking for one or for a household — in your own kitchen.
Travel skills
Practising the same trip together — a bus, train or walk to somewhere you go regularly — until you're confident doing it alone.
Shopping and budgeting
Writing a list, comparing prices, paying, and understanding which bills come out of your account and when.
Work and study readiness
Getting ready for a first job or a return to work: routines, travel, communication and the practical steps around it.
Everyday technology
Using a phone, apps and online services with confidence — banking, bookings, messages and appointments.
Preparing for SIL
The household routines that make shared, supported living work: cleaning, cooking, budgeting and living with others.
How funding usually works
Usually funded under: Capacity Building Supports
Capacity building supports are funded from the Capacity Building budget in an NDIS plan, which is usually allocated for specific goals and categories. The NDIA decides what your plan includes.
If building a skill is one of your plan goals, tell us which one and we can look at how your plan could fund it. If it isn't in your plan, your support coordinator or LAC can raise it at your next plan review.
General NDIS information. Your own plan decides what is funded — check it, or ask your plan manager, support coordinator or the NDIA (1800 800 110).

What happens when you enquire
- 1
Tell us what you need
Send an enquiry through this website or call 02 8722 0799. A few details about the support you're looking for and your suburb is enough to start.
- 2
Talk it through with our team
A member of the WSS team contacts you the way you prefer. We'll talk about your goals, your plan and where you live — there's no obligation.
- 3
Agree on your supports
Before anything starts, you agree on the supports, schedule and costs. NDIS participants usually do this through a service agreement.
- 4
Support begins
Your supports start, and we adjust them with you as your needs, routines or plan change.
Common questions
What's the difference between capacity building and daily living support?
Daily living support helps you with tasks as they happen. Capacity building helps you learn to do those tasks yourself, so the support you need changes over time. Many people have both.
Can capacity building happen in my own home?
Yes. Most skills are easiest to learn where you'll actually use them — your own kitchen, your own shops, your own route to work or TAFE.
How do I choose what to work on?
Start with what you want to be able to do. We'll talk about your goals, what's in your plan, and break a big goal into small steps you can practise.
Can it help me get ready for Supported Independent Living?
Yes. Practising cooking, cleaning, budgeting and shared-living routines before a move can make the change much easier.
