What community participation involves

Community participation is support to get out there: social outings, hobbies, sport, classes, volunteering, events and the everyday places that make up a life. A support worker comes alongside you — one-to-one or in a small group — so you can take part on your own terms.

It's usually funded under Assistance with Social, Economic and Community Participation in Core Supports. Your plan and the NDIA decide what's funded.

What's included

  • Social and recreational outings
  • Classes, hobbies and sport
  • Volunteering and community events
  • Building confidence in new places
  • One-to-one or small-group support

Community participation around Toongabbie

Toongabbie is a suburb about 30 km west of the Sydney CBD in Greater Western Sydney, split between the City of Parramatta, Blacktown City and Cumberland Council. Old Windsor Road lies to the north, and it neighbours Seven Hills, Old Toongabbie, Pendle Hill and Girraween.

Community participation in Toongabbie starts with what's close to home: McCoy Park, and the community programs and events run by City of Parramatta, listed on the council's website.

For outings further afield, Toongabbie station (T1 North Shore & Western Line; T5 Cumberland Line) connects Toongabbie to the rest of Sydney. Practising a train trip with a support worker is often a goal in its own right.

Local places that often feature in plans include Portico Plaza.

Many people we support also spend time in nearby Seven Hills, Northmead and Blacktown, and activities don't have to stop at the suburb boundary.

Questions

Community participation in Toongabbie: common questions

What can I do around Toongabbie with community participation support?

Whatever you'd like to work towards. Close to home that might include McCoy Park, Portico Plaza and programs and events run by City of Parramatta. We'll plan outings around your interests, and go further afield when you're ready.

Can a support worker help me catch the train from Toongabbie?

Yes. Travelling together from Toongabbie until the trip feels familiar is a common community participation goal, and can lead to travelling independently.

Can I choose what activities I do?

Yes. Community participation is built around what you want to do, not a fixed program.

Usually not. The NDIS generally funds the support worker's time, while activity costs like tickets and memberships are paid by you.
