Community participation

NDIS community participation and access support

Support to get out and do the things you enjoy — social and recreational activities, skill-building outings, one-to-one or in a group.

About community participation

Community participation support helps you take part in the activities and places that matter to you — catching up with friends, joining a class or club, exploring your local area, or building skills for work and everyday life.

It starts with your goals. We'll ask what you'd like to do more of, then plan support around that — one-to-one, or in a group if you'd enjoy the company.

Who it's for

  • Participants with social or community participation goals in their plan
  • People who'd like support to try new activities or build confidence going out
  • Participants who want to build skills for everyday life or work
What's included

How we can help

Social and recreational access

Support to get to and take part in social, sporting, cultural and recreational activities.

Skill-building outings

Outings that build practical skills — using public transport, shopping, budgeting, or getting to know your area.

One-to-one or group support

Choose individual support, or group activities if you'd like to meet people with similar interests.

Funding

How funding usually works

Usually funded under: Core Supports — Assistance with Social, Economic and Community Participation

Community participation is usually funded from Core Supports under Assistance with Social, Economic and Community Participation. Some skill-building supports are funded from Capacity Building instead.

Transport to and from activities may be claimed as part of the support in some cases — ask us how this works with your plan.

General NDIS information. Your own plan decides what is funded — check it, or ask your plan manager, support coordinator or the NDIA (1800 800 110).

Getting started

What happens when you enquire

  1. 1

    Tell us what you need

Send an enquiry through this website or call 02 8722 0799. A few details about the support you're looking for and your suburb is enough to start.

  2. 2

Talk it through with our team

A member of the WSS team contacts you the way you prefer. We'll talk about your goals, your plan and where you live — there's no obligation.

  3. 3

    Agree on your supports

Before anything starts, you agree on the supports, schedule and costs. NDIS participants usually do this through a service agreement.

  4. 4

    Support begins

Your supports start, and we adjust them with you as your needs, routines or plan change.

Questions

Common questions

What kinds of activities can community participation support include?

Anything connected to your goals — social outings, classes, sport, volunteering, cultural events, or practising skills like catching public transport.

Can I do activities in a group?

Yes. Support can be one-to-one or in a group, depending on what you prefer.

Does the support worker come with me?

Yes. Community participation support means a support worker accompanies and supports you during the activity.

Who pays for activity costs like tickets or class fees?

Usually you do. The NDIS generally funds the support to take part, not the everyday cost of the activity itself — such as entry tickets, memberships or meals out. Check your plan or ask your plan manager if you're unsure.
