What community participation involves

Community participation is support to get out there: social outings, hobbies, sport, classes, volunteering, events and the everyday places that make up a life. A support worker comes alongside you — one-to-one or in a small group — so you can take part on your own terms.

It's usually funded under Assistance with Social, Economic and Community Participation in Core Supports. Your plan and the NDIA decide what's funded.

What's included

  • Social and recreational outings
  • Classes, hobbies and sport
  • Volunteering and community events
  • Building confidence in new places
  • One-to-one or small-group support

Community participation around Blacktown

Blacktown is a suburb and commercial centre in Western Sydney, about 34 km west of the Sydney CBD, within the City of Blacktown. Its business district sits around Blacktown railway station, with neighbouring suburbs including Seven Hills, Prospect, Doonside and Marayong.

Community participation in Blacktown starts with what's close to home: Blacktown Arts Centre, Westpoint Blacktown, and the community programs and events run by Blacktown City Council, listed on the council's website.

For outings further afield, Blacktown station (T1 North Shore & Western Line; T5 Cumberland Line) connects Blacktown to the rest of Sydney. Practising a train trip with a support worker is often a goal in its own right.

Local places that often feature in plans include Max Webber Library (Blacktown).

Many people we support also spend time in nearby Seven Hills, Marayong and Prospect, and activities don't have to stop at the suburb boundary.

Questions

Community participation in Blacktown: common questions

What can I do around Blacktown with community participation support?

Whatever you'd like to work towards. Close to home that might include Blacktown Arts Centre, Max Webber Library (Blacktown), Westpoint Blacktown and programs and events run by Blacktown City Council. We'll plan outings around your interests, and go further afield when you're ready.

Can a support worker help me catch the train from Blacktown?

Yes. Travelling together from Blacktown until the trip feels familiar is a common community participation goal, and can lead to travelling independently.

Can I choose what activities I do?

Yes. Community participation is built around what you want to do, not a fixed program.

Are entry fees and tickets covered by the NDIS?

Usually not. The NDIS generally funds the support worker's time, while activity costs like tickets and memberships are paid by you.
