NDIS respite

NDIS respite and short-term support

Time away from your usual care arrangements, with your support needs still met — and a real chance for families and carers to rest.

About respite

Respite is time apart from your usual care arrangements. You get support somewhere that feels like a change of pace, and the people who support you day to day get to properly stop for a while.

It isn't a sign anything has gone wrong. Care is built on closeness, and closeness without a break wears down even the strongest arrangements. A planned break is how good arrangements stay good.

Respite can look different for everyone: support at home while a family member goes away, or a short stay somewhere suited to you. Either way your routine, preferences and pace are respected, and your support needs are covered.

Who it's for

What's included

How we can help

Your support needs met

The same personal care, routines and supports you rely on, delivered by people who know how you like things done.

A change of pace

Time to do something different — something new if you want it, familiar comforts if you'd rather.

A rest for carers

The people who support you every day get time to properly rest, knowing you're looked after.

Planning together

Booking respite is mostly a conversation: dates, routines, preferences, medications and who to contact.

Funding

How funding usually works

Usually funded under: Core Supports — Short Term Accommodation and Assistance

NDIS respite is commonly funded as Short Term Accommodation and Assistance (STA) in Core Supports, or as in-home support. Whether it's in your plan, and how much, is decided by the NDIA.

Tell us what kind of break you're thinking about and we can look at what your plan allows. Availability of a short stay depends on dates and your support needs, so ask as early as you can.

General NDIS information. Your own plan decides what is funded — check it, or ask your plan manager, support coordinator or the NDIA (1800 800 110).

Getting started

What happens when you enquire

  1. 1

    Tell us what you need

Send an enquiry through this website or call 02 8722 0799. A few details about the support you're looking for and your suburb is enough to start.

  2. 2

Talk it through with our team

A member of the WSS team contacts you the way you prefer. We'll talk about your goals, your plan and where you live — there's no obligation.

  3. 3

    Agree on your supports

Before anything starts, you agree on the supports, schedule and costs. NDIS participants usually do this through a service agreement.

  4. 4

    Support begins

Your supports start, and we adjust them with you as your needs, routines or plan change.

Questions

Common questions

What is NDIS respite?

Respite is a short break from your usual care arrangements, with support. Under the NDIS it's usually funded as Short Term Accommodation and Assistance, or as support at home.

Is respite only for carers?

No. It's for both sides: a change of pace for the participant, and a genuine rest for the family or carers who usually provide support.

Can respite happen at home?

Yes. Respite can be support at home while a carer is away, or a short stay somewhere suited to you.

How far ahead should I ask about respite?

As early as you can. Dates, support needs and availability all need to line up, so starting the conversation early gives you the most options.
