What respite involves
Respite is time apart from your usual care arrangements: support somewhere that feels like a change of pace for you, and a genuine rest for the people who support you day to day. It isn't a sign anything has gone wrong — it's how good arrangements stay good.
Respite can be support at home or a short stay somewhere suited to you. Under the NDIS it's commonly funded as Short Term Accommodation and Assistance, or as in-home support; the NDIA decides what your plan includes.
What's included
- Your usual support needs still met
- Your routine, preferences and pace respected
- Support at home, or a short stay
- A planned break for families and carers
Respite around Parramatta
Parramatta is a city and major commercial centre in Greater Western Sydney, about 24 km west of the Sydney CBD on the banks of the Parramatta River. It is the seat of the City of Parramatta and hosts government offices and courts, with neighbouring suburbs including Westmead, North Parramatta, Harris Park and Rosehill.
For families in Parramatta, respite often starts at home: support in your own home while a carer has a break, keeping your routine and your suburb the same.
A short stay is the other option. It won't necessarily be in Parramatta itself — we'll talk with you about what's suitable and available for your dates.
Respite can also cover a gap when a carer needs time for their own health, such as a planned stay at Westmead Hospital (Westmead).

Respite in Parramatta: common questions
Is there a respite house in Parramatta?
Not necessarily, and we won't suggest otherwise. Respite can happen in your own home in Parramatta, or as a short stay somewhere suited to you, which may be in another suburb. Ask us what's available for your dates.
Do you provide in-home respite in Parramatta?
Yes. We support people in Parramatta 2150 and nearby suburbs such as Harris Park, Westmead and North Parramatta. Which worker can help, and when, depends on the days and times you need, so tell us your suburb and routine when you enquire and we'll confirm what we can arrange.
Is respite only for carers?
No. It's a change of pace for the participant and a rest for the family or carers who usually provide support.
How far ahead should I ask?
As early as you can. Dates, support needs and availability all need to line up.
