What community participation involves

Community participation is support to get out there: social outings, hobbies, sport, classes, volunteering, events and the everyday places that make up a life. A support worker comes alongside you — one-to-one or in a small group — so you can take part on your own terms.

It's usually funded under Assistance with Social, Economic and Community Participation in Core Supports. Your plan and the NDIA decide what's funded.

What's included

  • Social and recreational outings
  • Classes, hobbies and sport
  • Volunteering and community events
  • Building confidence in new places
  • One-to-one or small-group support

Community participation around Telopea

Telopea is a suburb about 23 km north-west of the Sydney CBD in the City of Parramatta. It is bordered by Kissing Point Road to the south and Pennant Hills Road to the north, and neighbours Carlingford, Dundas, Dundas Valley and Oatlands.

Community participation in Telopea starts with what's close to home: Vineyard Creek Reserve, and the community programs and events run by City of Parramatta, listed on the council's website.

For outings further afield, Telopea light rail stop (L4 Westmead & Carlingford Line light rail) connects Telopea to the rest of Sydney. Practising a train trip with a support worker is often a goal in its own right.

Local places that often feature in plans include Dundas Library (Telopea) and Dundas Community Centre (21 Sturt Street, Telopea).

Many people we support also spend time in nearby Carlingford, Dundas and Ermington, and activities don't have to stop at the suburb boundary.

Questions

Community participation in Telopea: common questions

What can I do around Telopea with community participation support?

Whatever you'd like to work towards. Close to home that might include Vineyard Creek Reserve, Dundas Library (Telopea) and programs and events run by City of Parramatta. We'll plan outings around your interests, and go further afield when you're ready.

Can a support worker help me catch the train from Telopea?

Yes. Travelling together from Telopea until the trip feels familiar is a common community participation goal, and can lead to travelling independently.

Can I choose what activities I do?

Yes. Community participation is built around what you want to do, not a fixed program.

Are entry fees and tickets covered by the NDIS?

Usually not. The NDIS generally funds the support worker's time, while activity costs like tickets and memberships are paid by you.
