What community participation involves

Community participation is support to get out there: social outings, hobbies, sport, classes, volunteering, events and the everyday places that make up a life. A support worker comes alongside you — one-to-one or in a small group — so you can take part on your own terms.

It's usually funded under Assistance with Social, Economic and Community Participation in Core Supports. Your plan and the NDIA decide what's funded.

What's included

  • Social and recreational outings
  • Classes, hobbies and sport
  • Volunteering and community events
  • Building confidence in new places
  • One-to-one or small-group support

Community participation around Rydalmere

Rydalmere is a suburb about 21 km west of the Sydney CBD in the City of Parramatta, on the northern side of the Parramatta River. It has a shopping centre on both sides of Victoria Road at Park Road, and neighbours Ermington, Dundas, Camellia and Parramatta.

Community participation in Rydalmere starts with what's close to home: Western Sydney University Parramatta South campus, and the community programs and events run by City of Parramatta, listed on the council's website.

For outings further afield, Yallamundi light rail stop, formerly Rydalmere (L4 Westmead & Carlingford Line light rail) connects Rydalmere to the rest of Sydney. Practising a train trip with a support worker is often a goal in its own right.

Many people we support also spend time in nearby Dundas, Ermington and Telopea, and activities don't have to stop at the suburb boundary.
