What capacity building and life skills involves

Capacity building is personalised support to build practical life skills, confidence and independence: cooking your own meals, catching public transport alone, budgeting, shopping, using technology, preparing for work, or getting ready for Supported Independent Living.

We work at your pace, in your own home and community: learn, practise, build confidence, then do more independently. It's funded from the Capacity Building budget in your plan, which the NDIA sets.

What's included

  • Cooking and meal planning
  • Travel skills and public transport
  • Shopping and budgeting
  • Work and study readiness
  • Everyday technology
  • Preparing for SIL

Capacity building and life skills around Fairfield

Fairfield is a Western Sydney suburb about 30 km west of the Sydney CBD and the administrative centre of Fairfield City Council. It has a mix of commercial and residential development, with the town centre around Fairfield station and neighbouring suburbs including Smithfield, Canley Vale, Carramar and Fairfield Heights.

Skills are easiest to learn where you'll use them, so capacity building in Fairfield happens in your own home and around your own suburb.

For travel goals, that can mean practising the trip from Fairfield station (T2 Leppington & Inner West Line; T5 Cumberland Line) together until it's just something you do.

Shopping and budgeting goals can be practised at Neeta City: writing a list, comparing prices and paying.

If you're working out which goals to put in your plan, the Local Area Coordination partner for Fairfield City Council can help — see the local NDIS offices below.

Questions

Capacity building and life skills in Fairfield: common questions

Can you help me learn to catch the train from Fairfield?

Yes. Travel training usually means doing the same trip together — from Fairfield to somewhere you go regularly — until you're confident doing it alone.

Do you provide capacity building support in Fairfield?

Yes. We support people in Fairfield 2165 and nearby suburbs such as Cabramatta, Smithfield and Villawood. Which worker can help, and when, depends on the days and times you need, so tell us your suburb and routine when you enquire and we'll confirm what we can arrange.

How is capacity building different from daily living support?

Daily living support helps with tasks as they happen. Capacity building helps you learn to do them yourself, so the help you need changes over time.

Does it need to be in my plan?

Yes — it's funded from the Capacity Building budget. If a skill you want to build isn't in your plan, raise it at your plan review.
