What community participation involves

Community participation is support to get out there: social outings, hobbies, sport, classes, volunteering, events and the everyday places that make up a life. A support worker comes alongside you — one-to-one or in a small group — so you can take part on your own terms.

It's usually funded under Assistance with Social, Economic and Community Participation in Core Supports. Your plan and the NDIA decide what's funded.

What's included

  • Social and recreational outings
  • Classes, hobbies and sport
  • Volunteering and community events
  • Building confidence in new places
  • One-to-one or small-group support

Community participation around Whalan

Whalan is a suburb about 45 km west of the Sydney CBD in the City of Blacktown, part of Greater Western Sydney. It has a large sporting reserve and several smaller parks, and neighbours Mount Druitt, Dharruk, Tregear and Emerton.

Community participation in Whalan starts with what's close to home: Whalan Reserve, and the community programs and events run by Blacktown City Council, listed on the council's website.

Whalan doesn't have its own railway station, so outings usually start by car or bus — and learning a local bus trip with a support worker can become a goal in its own right.

Local places that often feature in plans include Our Library @ The Mount Druitt Hub (Mount Druitt) and RAAF Park.

Many people we support also spend time in nearby Mount Druitt, Tregear and Dharruk, and activities don't have to stop at the suburb boundary.

What can I do around Whalan with community participation support?

Whatever you'd like to work towards. Close to home that might include Whalan Reserve, Our Library @ The Mount Druitt Hub (Mount Druitt), RAAF Park and programs and events run by Blacktown City Council. We'll plan outings around your interests, and go further afield when you're ready.

Do you provide community participation support in Whalan?

Yes. We support people in Whalan 2770 and nearby suburbs such as Mount Druitt, Tregear and Dharruk. Which worker can help, and when, depends on the days and times you need, so tell us your suburb and routine when you enquire and we'll confirm what we can arrange.

Can I choose what activities I do?

Yes. Community participation is built around what you want to do, not a fixed program.

Are entry fees and tickets covered by the NDIS?

Usually not. The NDIS generally funds the support worker's time, while activity costs like tickets and memberships are paid by you.
