What community participation involves

Community participation is support to get out there: social outings, hobbies, sport, classes, volunteering, events and the everyday places that make up a life. A support worker comes alongside you — one-to-one or in a small group — so you can take part on your own terms.

It's usually funded under Assistance with Social, Economic and Community Participation in Core Supports. Your plan and the NDIA decide what's funded.

What's included

  • Social and recreational outings
  • Classes, hobbies and sport
  • Volunteering and community events
  • Building confidence in new places
  • One-to-one or small-group support

Community participation around Dharruk

Dharruk is a residential suburb about 46 km west of the Sydney CBD in the City of Blacktown, part of the Greater Western Sydney region. It is bounded by Carlisle Avenue, Popondetta Road, Jersey Road and Woodstock Avenue, and neighbours Mount Druitt, Whalan, Emerton and Hebersham.

Community participation in Dharruk starts with what's close to home: Chifley College Mount Druitt campus, and the community programs and events run by Blacktown City Council, listed on the council's website.

Dharruk doesn't have its own railway station, so outings usually start by car or bus — and learning a local bus trip with a support worker can become a goal in its own right.

Local places that often feature in plans include Our Library @ The Mount Druitt Hub (Mount Druitt).

Many people we support also spend time in nearby Mount Druitt, Whalan and Tregear, and activities don't have to stop at the suburb boundary.

Yes. We support people in Dharruk 2770 and nearby suburbs such as Mount Druitt, Whalan and Tregear. Which worker can help, and when, depends on the days and times you need, so tell us your suburb and routine when you enquire and we'll confirm what we can arrange.
