What community participation involves
Community participation is support to get out there: social outings, hobbies, sport, classes, volunteering, events and the everyday places that make up a life. A support worker comes alongside you — one-to-one or in a small group — so you can take part on your own terms.
It's usually funded under Assistance with Social, Economic and Community Participation in Core Supports. Your plan and the NDIA decide what's funded.
What's included
- Social and recreational outings
- Classes, hobbies and sport
- Volunteering and community events
- Building confidence in new places
- One-to-one or small-group support
Community participation around Westmead
Westmead is a suburb about 26 km west of the Sydney CBD, split between the City of Parramatta and Cumberland City Council. Health services are the main employer, and the suburb is bounded by the Parramatta River and Toongabbie Creek to the north, Parramatta Park to the east and the Great Western Highway to the south.
Community participation in Westmead starts with what's close to home: Western Sydney University Westmead campus, and the community programs and events run by City of Parramatta, listed on the council's website.
For outings further afield, Westmead station (T1 North Shore & Western Line; T5 Cumberland Line); Westmead, Westmead Hospital and Childrens Hospital light rail stops (L4 Westmead & Carlingford Line light rail) connects Westmead to the rest of Sydney. Practising a train trip with a support worker is often a goal in its own right.
Many people we support also spend time in nearby Parramatta, Harris Park and North Parramatta, and activities don't have to stop at the suburb boundary.

Community participation in Westmead: common questions
What can I do around Westmead with community participation support?
Whatever you'd like to work towards. Close to home that might include Western Sydney University Westmead campus and programs and events run by City of Parramatta. We'll plan outings around your interests, and go further afield when you're ready.
Can a support worker help me catch the train from Westmead?
Yes. Travelling together from Westmead until the trip feels familiar is a common community participation goal, and can lead to travelling independently.
Can I choose what activities I do?
Yes. Community participation is built around what you want to do, not a fixed program.
Are entry fees and tickets covered by the NDIS?
Usually not. The NDIS generally funds the support worker's time, while activity costs like tickets and memberships are paid by you.
