What community participation involves

Community participation is support to get out there: social outings, hobbies, sport, classes, volunteering, events and the everyday places that make up a life. A support worker comes alongside you — one-to-one or in a small group — so you can take part on your own terms.

It's usually funded under Assistance with Social, Economic and Community Participation in Core Supports. Your plan and the NDIA decide what's funded.

What's included

  • Social and recreational outings
  • Classes, hobbies and sport
  • Volunteering and community events
  • Building confidence in new places
  • One-to-one or small-group support

Community participation around Lidcombe

Lidcombe is a suburb about 15 km west of the Sydney CBD, in Cumberland City Council with a small industrial area in the north in the City of Parramatta. It neighbours Auburn, Berala, Rookwood and Sydney Olympic Park.

Community participation in Lidcombe starts with what's close to home: Lidcombe Shopping Centre, and the community programs and events run by Cumberland City Council, listed on the council's website.

For outings further afield, Lidcombe station (T1 North Shore & Western Line; T2 Leppington & Inner West Line; T3 Liverpool & Inner West Line; T6 Lidcombe & Bankstown Line; T7 Olympic Park Line) connects Lidcombe to the rest of Sydney. Practising a train trip with a support worker is often a goal in its own right.

Local places that often feature in plans include Lidcombe Library and Toy Library (Lidcombe) and Auburn Ruth Everuss Aquatic Centre (Church Street, Lidcombe).

Many people we support also spend time in nearby Auburn, Granville and Merrylands, and activities don't have to stop at the suburb boundary.

Questions

Community participation in Lidcombe: common questions

What can I do around Lidcombe with community participation support?

Whatever you'd like to work towards. Close to home that might include Lidcombe Library and Toy Library (Lidcombe), Lidcombe Shopping Centre and programs and events run by Cumberland City Council. We'll plan outings around your interests, and go further afield when you're ready.

Can a support worker help me catch the train from Lidcombe?

Yes. Travelling together from Lidcombe until the trip feels familiar is a common community participation goal, and can lead to travelling independently.

Can I choose what activities I do?

Yes. Community participation is built around what you want to do, not a fixed program.

Are entry fees and tickets covered by the NDIS?

Usually not. The NDIS generally funds the support worker's time, while activity costs like tickets and memberships are paid by you.
